Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Ultrasound
For those with any of the following symptoms: sudden leg or arm swelling / pain, pulmonary embolism, hard painful lumpy areas on their leg or arm.
What does this scan look for?
A Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) examination uses ultrasound to look at the deep veins (and some superficial veins) of the body to determine if there is a blood clot present.

What should I expect during this appointment?
This is a safe ultrasound scan to look for blood clots (also called DVT) in the veins in your leg(s) or arm(s).
Overview:
Scan times:
One leg: 30 minutes
Two legs: 45 minutes
One arm: 30 minutes
Two arms: 45 minutes
please wear loose-fitting clothing. If you have mobility issues please bring a support person to help.
Recommendations:
You will be required to slip out of your trousers (if we are scanning your leg) or your shirt (if we are scanning your arm) in our private changing space. A hospital gown, and linen will be provided to keep you warm and covered. You will recline on a bed with a pillow. The bed may be tilted up slightly.
Warm ultrasound gel and an ultrasound camera will be placed on your skin. Some pressure may be applied to your skin. Pictures of your blood vessels and their flow will be taken by a specialist sonographer and then interpreted.The specialist sonographer will give you a verbal result at the end of the ultrasound and we aim to provide formal reports within the same day.
